London is the capital and biggest city of England and the United Kingdom. It remains on the River Thames in south-east England at the top of a 50-mile (80 km) estuary down toward the North Sea, and has been a significant settlement for two centuries. The City of London, its old center and monetary focus, was established by the Romans as Londinium and holds limits near its middle age ones. Since the nineteenth hundred years, "London" has likewise alluded to the city around this center, generally split between the provinces of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Hertfordshire, which generally contains Greater London, administered by the Greater London Authority. The City of Westminster, toward the west of the City of London, has for quite a long time held the public government and parliament.
